Arts Council England International Artists Fellowships 2001-2003

The Arts Council launched its publication freefall at Sketch on 5 July 2004. freefall covers the experiences of 37 artists across the artforms who were awarded international fellowships between 2001 and 2003 - the pilot phase of the Arts Council's International Artists Fellowships Programme.

The catalogue contains personal accounts by the artists and includes an essay by the cultural theorist Nikos Papastergiadis and interviews, images and poems. There is also an audio CD of extracts of the work of some of the artists - composers, poets and writers.

“For us, the publication freefall celebrates artistic explorers who go beyond boundaries. Over the past 3 years the Arts Council has worked with partners including the British Council, Visiting Arts and the Triangle Trust to enable many ‘expeditions’ to research and practice abroad; reciprocal fellowships are also being established in England. Artists have worked on the edge, crossed borders and challenged their own thinking as they engage new cultural and geo-political forces. The Arts Council is proud to be associated with this initiative.”
(Peter Hewitt, Chief Executive of Arts Council England,
